BART

BART riders have long been aware that two distinct voices announce trains entering the stations. There is then a separate voice for each side of the platform. The bored traveler will quickly recognize that one of the voices is female while the other is male. What is missed by most who stand idly on one of the platforms of the Bay Area Rapid Transit is that these voice at one time cohabited intimately. Although nowadays they claim their sharing of a room near the McAurther station continues because neither of them can afford to live on their own, there was a time when that little room was quite a center of warmth and hospitality for east bay travelers. That their relationship is no longer what it used to be has saddened more than a few dedicated commuters. Long time riders may remember the light hearted, if somewhat annoying banter in which they used to engage while announcing the trains. Though at the time many referred to it at best as ‘stupid’ and more often confusing there was a time when they would pit one train against another announcing the diminishing distance between them as if they were in a race.
